The Fan Dance is one of the first major tests, both physically and mentally that the SAS put their recruits through during the selection process. It is a gruelling 15 mile hike over Pen Y Fan (the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons) and then back again carrying a minimum of
15 KGs on your back.
Three coaches from Boxing For Better C.I.C.; Dave, Keith & James will be completing the Fan Dance on 18th June 2022. They will hit the road at 2:30pm on Friday and after a 4 hour drive will reach their hostel for the night. The following morning at 6:30am they will meet at the start point where their bags will be weighed and they will prepare the ascent and descent only to turn around and do it all over again in reverse. It is estimated that an SAS soldier should complete this challenge in 4.5 hours however an average person would usually take between 7 and 9 hours to complete it. The challenge is made harder as it is taking place during the English summer where temperatures could get quite high making dehydration a very real issue. We have been advised to take at least 5 litres of water as well as other supplies which will take our weight to over 20 KGs. The coaches have been putting in the preparation for this challenge and are very much looking forward to the day (but not so much to the drive home). The reason we are doing this challenge is to raise much needed funding for Boxing For Better C.I.C. so that we can continue to deliver our free projects in Greater Manchester and supporting children from some of the most deprived areas of our part of the country. If you would like to donate please follow this link, any support no matter how small will make a huge difference and will give us the encouragement to complete this challenge next week.
